Ailsa Craig

 


Ailsa craigAilsa Craig is a small island situated not far due south of Arran. Known in Gaelic as Ailsse Creag, meaning 'fairy rock' or Creag Ealasaid (Elizabeth's rock), it is also known as Paddy's Milestone and Carraig Alastair (Alastair's rock).

Its population, taken from the 1991 census stands at 0 although in 1981 it boasted a population of 3 lighthouse keepers until all our lighthouses went automatic. Note that the island is now a protected bird sanctury and boat trips are available to circumnavigate the island. The highest point on the island stands proud at 338m (1,109 ft).
