Bute
The island of Bute, a (relatively) short distance north-north-east of Arran with the small island of Inchmarnock just off its western shore and on its eastern side, The Cumbraes. For centuries, Bute was known as Rothes-ay (or Roderick's Island), the name which is now attributed to the islands main town. The main town was known in Gaelic as 'Baile Bhoid' or the town of corn.
Sir Richard Attenborough lays claim to 600 of the islands 12,217 hectares (30,188 acres), and the appropriately named Windy Hill stands at 278m (912ft) as the islands highest point. The population (from the 1991 census) stood then at 7,354.
