Tiree

Tiree

Tiree's first notable feature: it's very flat. It lays claim to just two hills, 'Ben Hough' which stands at 119m (390 ft) and 'Ben Hynish', the big one, standing at 141m (462 ft). It is located a short distance southwest of Coll and represents Argyll's most westerly point. The island covers a reasonable 7,834 hectares (19,358 acres) and had, from the 1991 census, a population of 768. However, this was not always the case. In 1830 the population of the island was a massive 4,450 but was subsequently driven down by famines and evictions.
