Campbeltown

Located at the southern end of Kintyre, Campbeltown is quite an agricultural area with a noticeable scenery change as you approach along the A83. The population here stood at 5,601 in the 1991 census.

One of the notable features in Campbeltown is the old picture house. Reputedly one of the oldest cinemas in Scotland, it was first opened in 1913.

Places of Interest

Campbeltown Cross - The stone from which the cross was made originates from the area of Loch Sween, many miles to the north, and the carving includes elaborate leaf scroll decoration although several figures were erased from the monument probably at the time of the Reformation.

Campbeltown Heritage Centre - Campbeltown Heritage Centre has very interesting displays on the town's history and former industries, as well as the canal and railway which once ran westwards towards Machrihanish and the coalfields.

Tourist Information Centre - On the Old Quay at the harbour with its never-ceasing commercial and leisure activity is the town's tourist information centre, the place to go for assistance with accommodation, leaflets, tide tables (for visits to Davaar Island) and general advice on events and places of interest.
