Dunoon

Situated southeast of Inverary, Dunoon boasted a population of 9011 from the 1991 census.

As with most of the settlements around this area, Dunoon probably goes back a long way. It could boast to have it's own castle but the name of the place its self suggests that this was a fortified place for a long time. The castle was most probably built on the remains of an earlier fortification of some kind.

Places of Interest

Cowal Highland Gathering - On the last weekend in August, Dunoon plays host to the Cowal Highland Gathering, the largest of its kind in the world. The grand finale of this event is the spectacle of the massed pipes and drums of more than 150 bands marching through the streets of the town.

Cowal Bird Garden This is a small animal collection situated in the unspoilt scenery of the Cowal Peninsular within a mile of Dunoon. It is a collection of primary interest to families and young children. Animals include Donkeys, Goats, Macaws, Owls, Pigs and Rabbits.

Ardnadam Heritage Trail - A ruined but pleasant chamber is all that remains of this Clyde cairn. It sits on a mound facing NE overlooking the Holy Loch.
