Lochgilphead

Lying at the head of Loch Gilp as the name would suggest, the view from the green at the front of the loch is something special. Looking down the length of Loch Gilp, you can see out on to Loch Fyne and even as far as Arran.

Less of a tourist orientated town than Oban, Lochgilphead is somewhat smaller and more of an administration centre laying claim to them main Argyll & Bute Council buildings and the Argyll & Islands Enterprise centre.

Places of Interest

Carnasserie Castle Ruin is in Kilmartin, approximately 16 miles from Lochgilphead. Take the A83 towards Tarbert and just past Lochgilphead, take the A816 towards Oban for approximately 16 miles to Carnasserie. Admission is free.

Kilmartin Glen is the valley where you will find loads of evidence of the Ancient Kingdoms of the Scots. It is more than 5000 years old and here you will find fascinating standing stones, stone circles and castles. Take the A816 towards Oban for approximately 16 miles to Kilmartin.

Kilmartin House Museum of Ancient Culture is a well known Archaeological museum. Here you will find fantastic modern audio-visual and interactive displays.
