Oban
Situated east of Mull at the northern end of the A816, Oban is a pleasant place to visit and a good location from which to visit many of the islands via the ferry terminal. The population of Oban from the 1991 census stood at 8,390.
One of the most prominent features most noticeable on arrival is McCaig's Tower. This rather strange and appealing monument stands up on the hills overlooking the bay. Built by, or rather commissioned by James Stuart McCaig in 1897, the building continued up until 1902 when McCaig died. The philosophy behind the structure was a monument to the McCaig family and also to provide work for the locals over the months of winter. Never completed, and indeed nobody is quite sure what it was supposed to look like when finished, the tower is quite striking in appearance. To hear the funny/strange story, you'll have to visit Oban and ask someone local to the area about the UFO story related to the tower...
Oban provides the largest range of shops for those of us staying in the local vicinity and is quite a tourist orientated town in the summer due to its range of shops and ferry terminal.
